This new Netflix show by Kickstart Ent was a great project to be a part of. It shows Barbie and the Barbie universe rebranded in a whole new and bold direction which required a lot of strong artistic direction, and conviction from the client, Mattel.

Initially, I was involved with developing the look for the FX, working closely with the art director, to find a bold and confident style that matched the work coming out of the art department.

We had a lot of fun experimenting and coming up with novel ways to create clean and dynamic 2D and 3DFX that could be iterated out over a season. Later I had to leave the project to jump into other productions. However, the After Effects Lead we brought in did a fantastic job of continuing my groundwork and supplying a ton of flair of her own.

I’m super proud of the initial design work I did on this, if only to help lay the ground for another artist. I’m also really happy with the new-hire I helped select, not only did they thrive in the role as AFX Lead, but they elevated our whole team with their own insightful designs. So I give myself a small pat on the back for finding that gem of a person too.
